The care and safety of our members remain\u00a0our\u00a0priority.\u00a0 \u00a0Therefore, using our\u00a0website\u00a0as the focal point\u00a0for valuable\u00a0information, we ask that you please click here — https:\/\/kcseniorsoftball.org\/?page_id=31 —\u00a0to review some of the basics to maintain\u00a0your\u00a0best possible health and safety\u00a0guidelines–especially the “High Heat Days” portion…due to the\u00a0upcoming hot part of the\u00a0season.<\/p>\n
When to cancel any of our games\u00a0due to heat\u00a0had\u00a0been a lengthy\u00a0topic of controversy\u00a0within the organization for years.\u00a0 In the past, we had solely let that decision up to our individual Conference Coordinators (in conjunction with input from the corresponding conference\u2019s managers).\u00a0 Needless to say, that just led to additional\u00a0controversy.\u00a0 Therefore, your\u00a0board made an organization-wide decision a couple of years ago as to when games are to be canceled (due to the “heat index”<\/strong>) and when\u00a0they can be played.<\/p>\n
Again, those guidelines are below and on our website.\u00a0\u00a0Please be aware, these guidelines are our initial attempt at pinpointing an agreed-upon \u201cRealFeel\u201d temperature as the go \/ no-go reading relative to when games will be canceled and when they can be played.\u00a0\u00a0 Meaning??\u2026.meaning that as we trial test these current guidelines, we may find the future need to increase or lower this 100\u00b0 RealFeel reading as our guide.\u00a0\u00a0Please be patient, and feel free to provide us with\u00a0constructive\u00a0feedback accordingly.<\/p>\n
Our bottom-line goal here is our members\u2019 safety and health.\u00a0\u00a0 We are NOT wishing to make our play any more difficult\u00a0(dealing with the number of hot days we continue to encounter).\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019d prefer every day you play to be the perfect weather day, but we know that\u2019s not possible.<\/p>\n

We will use the \u201cRealFeel\u201d (not ReelFeel Shade) reading as the temperature (readily visible on the iPhone\u00a0or Android\u00a0app) as our policy\u2019s guide.\u00a0 And the 100\u00b0 reading, in the sun, as the no-play cut-off reading.<\/p>\n
If you’d like to track a variety heat index characteristics and readings for\u00a0your current location\u00a0or your destination location\u00a0(like the park at which you are going to play), go to the app store on your phone to download the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool app —\u00a0https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=erg.com.nioshheatindex .\u00a0 Or if you have an iPhone –\u00a0https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/osha-niosh-heat-safety-tool\/id1239425102<\/p>\n
The RealFeel temperature takes into account the\u00a0temperature,\u00a0humidity,\u00a0wind speed, and\u00a0angle of the sun.<\/p>\n
Of course, the Conference Coordinator (CC) can always make the\u00a0decision not to play even if the RealFeel reading is under the 100\u00b0 reading, if he \/ she\u00a0so chooses.\u00a0\u00a0 If the first game starts on the “30” (i.e., 5:30) and the RealFeel reading is 100\u00b0 or more at 5:00, but the RealFeel is forecasted to be under 100\u00b0 at 6:00, the\u00a0games may be started.\u00a0 \u00a0The same would be for games played in the morning.\u00a0 If the RealFeel reading is under 100\u00b0 at the start of the game\u00a0but goes over that reading towards the end of the game (or is\u00a0forecasted\u00a0to go over that 100\u00b0 reading by the end), the decision can be made to\u00a0conclude that game in progress.<\/p>\n

- The CC, or anyone else wishing to utilize RealFeel, can go to the AccuWeather website and type in the zip code for their appropriate ballpark to get the corresponding RealFeel information.\u00a0 OR\u2026he \/ she can access the same AccuWeather information on their phone app.\u00a0\u00a0 Below are snapshots of the Android phone\u2019s AccuWeather home screen (for Overland Park, KS)\u00a0and the next 4-hour forecast.\u00a0 \u00a0Each person\u2019s phone can be set to whatever zip code\u00a0or city \/ state desired\u00a0and changed as he \/ she wishes.

<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n- The CC can then make the decision as to whether\u00a0or not\u00a0to cancel their games at a pre-determined time prior to their games\u2014a time which they feel is best for their conference\u2019s players.<\/li>\n
- The CC can also, in the case of morning leagues, play the first game under the 100\u00b0 mark and then not play the second game if over the 100\u00b0 mark.\u00a0 In the case of the evening conferences, a CC could decide not to play the first sets of game(s)\u00a0but play the late games\u2014when the RealFeel is forecasted to drop below the 100\u00b0 mark.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- Non-compliance by the CC may result in removal of the CC from his \/ her coordinator position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Ever get to the ballpark\u00a0only\u00a0to discover\u00a0you are\u00a0the only one there…because the fields are pretty much flooded from a “very recent” rainstorm; or arrive\u00a0there on a sweltering hot day to\u00a0again\u00a0find yourself alone\u00a0at the park because the games were\u00a0cancelled due to unacceptable heat-index readings?\u00a0 Or even worse yet, you experience\u00a0a downpour at your house and you don’t go to the park–thinking the\u00a0games are going to\u00a0be cancelled….only to find out later your\u00a0team ended up being short of players because you, mistakenly, had not shown up?<\/p>\n

THERE IS NEW CRITERIA TO QUALIFY YOU FOR\u00a0AN AMBASSADOR JACKET !!<\/strong><\/h3>\n
As of this year, 2026, your\u00a0Board of Directors agreed to expand the universe of those eligible to receive an Ambassador jacket, or windbreaker.<\/strong><\/p>\n
What are\u00a0the new criteria’s requirement options\u00a0in this\u00a0expanded format?<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Qualifying service\u00a0consists of earning “credit points” via the :<\/p>\n
- \n
- Number of years played in the league, and \/ or<\/li>\n
- Number of years served as a team manager\u00a0and \/ or<\/li>\n
- Number of years served as a conference coordinator, co-coordinator, and \/ or<\/li>\n
- Number of years of service\u00a0on the Board of Directors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Any member who accumulates a total of 20 qualifying credits, in any combination of\u00a0playing, managing, coordinating, or serving on the Board<\/strong>, is now\u00a0eligible for an Ambassador jacket.\u00a0 \u00a0Qualifying service is limited to four credits per calendar year \u2013 one credit point each for each qualifying category: Managing;\u00a0Coordinating;\u00a0Playing;\u00a0and\/or Serving on the Board of Directors.<\/p>\n
